ALLUSION | A widely recognized reference to a date person place or thing specific to the example |
ANTHROPOMORPHISM | Taking an object and giving it human and animal traits not (but not thought and emotion) |
OXYMORON | Two contradicting words (Freezer burn) |
PARADOX | ?. . .aha! Sounds puzzling but then begins to make sense |
ANALOGY | Extended comparison between two unlike things to show how they are alike |
PERSONIFICATION | Giving thought and emotion to an object |
ANECDOTE | An entertaining story with a lesson, and a point |
PUN | Play on words: same words with different meanings or same sounding words |
SIMILE | A comparison between unlike things (as, like, than, resemble) |
METAPHOR | A comparison between unlike things directly stated |
EUPHEMISM | A nicer way if saying something |
EPHIPHET | A nickname for something or someone |
UNDERSTATMENT | Saying less than what truly happened, being modest |
CLICHÉ | Overused word or phrase or idea |
ASSONONCE | Repition of vowel sounds (A, E, I, O, U) |
INCONGRUITY | Something that doesn’t go together, something that stands out |
