| HYPERBOLE | An exaggeration |
| METONOMY | Reference using things most commonly recognized together |
| ALLITERATION | Repetition of consonant sounds (not A,E,O,I,U) |
| APOSTROPHE | When an Author talks to something that isn’t there as if it was |
| ALLUSION | A widely recognized reference to a date person place or thing specific to the example |
| ANTHROPOMORPHISM | Taking an object and giving it human and animal traits not (but not thought and emotion) |
| OXYMORON | Two contradicting words (Freezer burn) |
| PARADOX | ?. . .aha! Sounds puzzling but then begins to make sense |
| ANALOGY | Extended comparison between two unlike things to show how they are alike |
| PERSONIFICATION | Giving thought and emotion to an object |
| ANECDOTE | An entertaining story with a lesson, and a point |
| PUN | Play on words: same words with different meanings or same sounding words |
| SIMILE | A comparison between unlike things (as, like, than, resemble) |
| METAPHOR | A comparison between unlike things directly stated |
| EUPHEMISM | A nicer way if saying something |
| EPHIPHET | A nickname for something or someone |
| UNDERSTATMENT | Saying less than what truly happened, being modest |
| CLICHÉ | Overused word or phrase or idea |
| ASSONONCE | Repition of vowel sounds (A, E, I, O, U) |
| INCONGRUITY | Something that doesn’t go together, something that stands out |
